THE SIGNAL METHOD / HOW WE WORK

Find the one story worth telling.

Most brand films are decided in a production meeting. Ours are decided in a room full of people who work at your company, before anyone touches a camera. This is what happens in that room, and everything that follows from it.

SIGNAL

The most expensive part of filmmaking is telling the wrong story beautifully.

The most expensive part of filmmaking is telling the wrong story beautifully.

The most expensive part of filmmaking is telling the wrong story beautifully.

A film fails long before anyone sees it. It fails in the brief, when a company decides what it wants to say instead of finding out what is true. Everything after that is craft spent in the wrong direction. Better cameras. Better colour. Better music. Same silence.

The Signal Method exists to stop that at the only point where stopping it is cheap.

FIND THE SIGNAL

We start by listening, not shooting.

We start by listening, not shooting.

Two to three weeks. No cameras.

STEP ONE OF FOUR

Leadership, the people doing the actual work, and often a customer who sees you from the outside.

Before we plan anything, we sit down with the people inside the story. Usually six to ten conversations across your organisation: leadership, the people doing the actual work, and often a customer or a partner who sees you from the outside. These are conversations, not interviews. Nobody is being auditioned and nothing is being scripted.

We are listening for the thing everyone circles back to without realising they are doing it. A phrase that keeps returning. A moment three different people describe in almost the same words. A hesitation before an answer. That is the signal. It is almost never the thing the brief asked for, and it is usually something the company stopped noticing years ago because it is simply how things are done around here.

The story you are looking for is already inside the building. It has just been there so long nobody sees it.

A real storyfinding conversation, mid-session.

WHAT THAT LOOKED LIKE

Etsy came to us for seller films. The signal was that a listing hides a person. Fifty films later, every one of them opened on a face.

SET THE NORTH STAR

Five words that every decision answers to.

Five words that every decision answers to.

One session. Agreed together, in writing.

STEP TWO OF FOUR

An example set, from the Etsy seller films. Each keyword answers a different question, so nothing important goes uncovered.

Out of those conversations we agree on five Story Keywords with you. Not themes, not adjectives lifted from a brand deck. Five words that describe what this story has to do to the person watching it. They are not five versions of the same idea. Each one answers a different question, so the things that usually get missed cannot be: what makes this worth watching, what only you can say, who has to feel it, what they feel, and what they do next. Five words, and the film has nowhere to hide.

They also do something quieter and more valuable. This is the single thing that keeps a large approval process from turning into a committee edit.

Without a North Star, a review meeting becomes a vote. With one, it becomes a check.

BUILD WITH INTENTION

Every frame serves the objective.

Every frame serves the objective.

Character, structure, then production.

STEP THREE OF FOUR

Where it opens, where the tension sits, and what we want them to do when it ends.

The character comes first. An audience will never care about your goal more than the person on screen does. So we look for someone with real desire and something genuinely at stake, and we cast that decision as carefully as a director casts a lead. Not the most senior person available. The one whose want is visible.

Then the structure. We storyboard the film before we shoot it: where it opens, where the tension sits, what question keeps someone watching past the first fifteen seconds, and what we want them to do when it ends. You sign off on that while changes still cost a conversation instead of a reshoot.

Then we shoot. Location, sound, light and pace are decided against those five keywords rather than a mood board. In the edit, the same test applies to every cut. If a shot is beautiful and does not serve the objective, it goes.

On location, mid-shoot.

WHAT THAT LOOKED LIKE

Sonepar came to us for a CSR film. The signal was one nurse. The programme reached a million families, so we filmed the one it started with.

DELIVER THE SYSTEM

A film is not a deliverable. It is a system.

A film is not a deliverable. It is a system.

What actually lands on your desk.

STEP FOUR OF FOUR

Built as one engagement, not a set of upsells.

A flagship film that only exists on a landing page has not finished its job. So we build the film and the things that carry it, as one engagement rather than a set of upsells.

The film

The flagship story, made to the standard the story deserves.

The cutdowns

Versions built for the channels your audience actually uses, including sound off, rather than one film chopped shorter.

The assets

Stills, quotes and moments your teams will reuse for a year after delivery.

The distribution plan

Where the film goes, in what order, and what we expect it to do when it gets there.

Everything above is scoped to the outcome the story needs to produce. Which is why we discuss investment after we understand the objective, never before.

INSIDE THE ORGANISATION / WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE FOR YOU

Enterprise storytelling is not just filmmaking. It is alignment.

Enterprise storytelling is not just filmmaking. It is alignment.

The method is only useful if it survives contact with a real organisation. Here is how it holds up when a film has to pass through more than one set of hands.

Two rounds of review, built into the schedule.

The first is on the story, before we shoot, when changes are cheap. The second is on the cut.

We ask for one consolidated set of notes each round, because ten people sending separate comments is how films get worse.

Brand and legal see the outline before the camera comes out.

Compliance rarely objects to a story. It objects to a surprise.

Bringing legal in at the outline stage costs a week and saves a reshoot.

One name signs.

When regional and global teams both have a say, we name the decision maker at the start. Everyone contributes. One person signs.

We ask who that is in the first conversation, and if the honest answer is that it is unclear, that is worth resolving before any money is spent.

A clear window, start to finish.

A flagship project typically runs four to six weeks from first conversation to final delivery, depending on how far we travel and how many people are inside the story.

WHERE IT COMES FROM / LINEAGE

Trained in it. Then built our own.

Trained in it. Then built our own.

Trained in it. Then built our own.

French Fries Films is India’s only Muse Storytelling certified studio. That training is where the discipline comes from: the insistence on listening before shooting, and on measuring every creative decision against a stated objective. The Signal Method is what that training became after a decade of applying it here. To Indian factory floors and hospital wards, to global marketing teams working across time zones, to a documentary that reached Netflix’s Top 10 and pushed a conversation to the Supreme Court.

The principles are borrowed and we say so. The method is ours.

YOUR MOVE / ONE CONVERSATION

The first step costs you
20 minutes.

The first step costs you

The first step costs you

In a Narrative Strategy Session we run a compressed version of step one. We listen, and we tell you what we think your signal is. You walk away with a read on your current narrative and the story opportunity you are sitting on and not using, whether or not we work together.

No pitch. No pressure. We partner with enterprises investing in one flagship story, not a content pipeline.
